Los Angeles International Airport has a lengthy and rich history. The land that the airport was built on was once part of the Mexican Province. It was not until the mid 1860's that what would become the state of California was annexed by the United States. The property was owned by several wealthy farming families until the development of the airport in 1927. During the 1920's aviators began using a portion of the farms as make shift landing strips. On the weekends people would gather to marvel and the new advances in transportation. This was how to concept was developed. The original name of the airport was Mines Field, after the real estate mogul William W. Mines sold the original 640 acres to the City of Los Angeles. On July 25, 1928 the plans for what would become one of the busiest airports in the world were put into motion.
